KUALA LUMPUR, August 20 — The Malaysian national men’s hockey team gave world number one Belgium a formidable challenge before succumbing to a 5-3 defeat in their final Pool B fixture of the 2026 FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup at the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, Belgium, early today.

Despite facing the tournament co-hosts and top-ranked side, the Speedy Tigers mounted a spirited performance, pushing back twice in the second half through set-piece execution and quick field attacks.

Malaysia found themselves trailing by two goals at halftime after prolific Belgian forward Tom Boon struck twice in quick succession during the second quarter, finding the net in the 16th and 19th minutes.

The Speedy Tigers responded immediately after the break. Just one minute into the second half, Nik Aiman Nik Rozemi marked his landmark 200th international appearance by converting a precise penalty corner in the 31st minute to reduce the deficit.

Boon restored Belgium’s two-goal cushion four minutes later, but Malaysia fought back when Marhan Jalil converted another penalty corner in the 37th minute to bring the score to 3-2.

Belgium widened the gap again in the 43rd minute when Thibeau Stockbroekx scored to make it 4-2. In the 52nd minute, Boon completed a four-goal performance from a penalty corner, though Malaysia answered in the same minute through a field goal from Akhimullah Anuar Esook to narrow the final margin to 5-3.

National head coach Brendon Carolan commended his team’s resilience and tactical discipline following the hard-fought contest, emphasizing that fine margins determined the final outcome against elite opposition.

“It was a good performance today. I think obviously we’d like to get the result. We always want to get a result. The guys worked hard on a new defensive system, so it’s just fine-tuning. It’s the small details that make a difference at this level,” Carolan said after the match.

The defeat leaves Malaysia with one point from three matches in Pool B, following an opening 1-5 loss against defending champions Germany and a dramatic 3-3 draw against France in their second match.

With the pool stage concluded, the South African head coach stated that the team’s focus immediately shifts toward the crossover classification round, where Malaysia will aim to bolster its world ranking.

“Obviously we need to identify who we have in our crossovers and we need to prepare properly for those games because obviously we want to improve on world rankings. I think we’re playing reasonably well, I think we’ll make sure we’re fully prepared for who’s in our pool to make sure we’re ready to go in two days,” Carolan added.

Malaysia’s upcoming crossover opponents will be finalized following the conclusion of the remaining group matches across the tournament.
