IPOH, Sept 11 – A 38-year-old man is feared drowned after leaping into Sungai Perak to retrieve a boat that had drifted away from his fish cage at Batu 18, Kampung Kuchai, near Bota Kiri, on Thursday afternoon.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of operations Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad reported that the department received an emergency distress call at 5:00 pm. Firefighters from the Seri Iskandar, Parit, and Kampung Gajah Fire and Rescue Stations were immediately dispatched to the location, arriving by 5:25 pm. Upon arrival, teams learned that the victim had entered the river in an attempt to recover his drifting vessel.
A family member present at the fish cage attempted an immediate rescue as the man began struggling in the current. Describing the rescue attempt, Sabarodzi stated in a statement on Friday, “The victim’s nephew tried to help, but was unsuccessful in rescuing him,”
Following the incident, firefighters and local residents conducted an initial surface search along the river between 5:00 pm and 9:45 pm on Thursday evening, but the victim remained unaccounted for. Authorities subsequently established a Fire Control Centre at the Lambor Kiri Pump Station to coordinate search efforts across the area.
Search and rescue operations expanded significantly on Friday morning with the deployment of specialized units. Outlining the ongoing deployment, Sabarodzi said, “The search operation resumed at 8 am today with the assistance of four members of the Water Rescue Unit (PPDA) from the Teluk Intan BBP and four PPDA members from the Pulau Pangkor BPP. The K9 Special Team will also assist in the search for the victim,”
