KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 – The Kuala Lumpur Department of Environment (DOE) inspected 50 motorcycles during an enforcement operation in the capital city on Saturday, issuing compounds to six owners after their vehicles failed noise and exhaust emission tests.
Kuala Lumpur DOE director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Wahab stated that the six motorcycles were found in violation of environmental standards, contributing to urban air pollution and noise nuisance. Outlining the statutory framework applied during the exercise, Sharifah Zakiah noted in a statement on Sunday, “The compounds were issued under the Environmental Quality (Motor Vehicle Noise) Regulations 1987 and Environmental Quality (Control of Emissions from Motorcycles) Regulations 2003.”
The multi-agency operation was carried out in collaboration with the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station and the Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department (JPJ). Reaffirming that inspections will proceed regularly to enforce compliance, Sharifah Zakiah stressed, “Consistent enforcement measures are important to safeguard environmental sustainability, thereby contributing to better air quality for public well-being,”.
Highlighting the scope of surveillance across the capital throughout the year, Sharifah Zakiah disclosed that the Kuala Lumpur DOE has conducted 50 targeted enforcement operations focusing on motorcycle exhaust emissions and noise infractions. Across these joint exercises, a total of 235 compounds have been issued to vehicle owners found to be in violation of environmental regulations.
