metmalaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23  – The 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon (MTL) season in Malaysia is projected to commence on October 27, 2026, and persist through March 2027, according to Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) Director-General Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip.

In an official statement released on Friday, October 23, 2026, MetMalaysia warned that the early phase of the monsoon between November and January will bring heavy rainfall episodes, while the latter phase will heighten the risk of extreme heatwaves.

Rainy Phase, Heatwave Forecasts, and Public Preparedness

Key meteorological forecasts, seasonal phases, and public safety advisories include:

  • Heavy Rain & Flood Risks: MetMalaysia anticipates between three and five prolonged heavy rain episodes during the initial phase from November 2026 to January 2027. These conditions are expected to trigger localized flooding in low-lying areas and districts close to major river basins.
  • Maritime Hazards: Sustained strong northeasterly winds are projected to generate rough sea conditions and rising sea levels across the South China Sea.
  • Dry Phase & Super El Niño Heatwaves: During the monsoon’s final phase from January to March 2027, rainfall will diminish significantly, particularly in Sabah and northern Peninsular Malaysia. Combined with the ongoing Super El Niño phenomenon, this phase is expected to bring prolonged hot, dry weather and severe heatwave conditions.
  • Official Information Channels: The public is urged to monitor weather updates and heavy rain advisories via the official portal (www.met.gov.my), the myCuaca mobile application, MetMalaysia’s social media channels, or the hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
