KULAI, Sept 13 – Police fired a shot at the tyre of a Perodua Myvi after a 23-year-old couple allegedly rammed a police motorcycle and attempted to strike officers during a crime-prevention inspection along Jalan Kenari in Bandar Putra, Kulai, early Saturday morning.
Kulai District Police Chief ACP Tan Seng Lee stated that the incident occurred at approximately 1:20 am when officers from the district police headquarters’ Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) flagged down a suspicious black Perodua Myvi carrying a local man and woman.
Outlining the escalation, Tan said in a statement on Sunday, “During the inspection, the suspects became aggressive and tried to flee by ramming the URB motorcycle and a public vehicle, a Mazda CX-5, besides attempting to hit the police officers. Following this, the URB personnel fired one shot at the tyre of the suspects’ vehicle to defend themselves and stop the vehicle. However, the suspects managed to escape.” One URB officer sustained minor leg injuries after becoming trapped when the patrol motorcycle was struck.
Following the escape, Kulai police launched an immediate operation and apprehended both 23-year-old suspects separately in Bandar Putra and Kluang within 24 hours of the incident between 11:30 am and 8:30 pm on Saturday. Investigating officers also impounded the black Perodua Myvi believed to have been used during the attempt, alongside a remote control unit.
Preliminary urine screening tests conducted on both individuals returned negative for illicit substances, while background checks verified that neither suspect possessed a prior criminal record. Tan confirmed that the motive remains under active investigation, with the case framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, Section 332 for voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant, and Section 186 for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of public functions. Both suspects are being brought before the Johor Bahru Magistrates’ Court today for a remand application.
