Ten Locations Across Malaysia Hit Unhealthy Air Quality Levels, Serian Tops Air Pollution List

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — Ten monitoring stations across Malaysia recorded unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings as of 10 am today, with the majority of affected locations heavily concentrated in Sarawak.

According to real-time data published by the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), the town of Serian in Sarawak registered the nation’s worst air quality with an API reading of 183, remaining firmly in the unhealthy range.

Other severely affected districts in Sarawak include Kuching and Samarahan, which both logged API readings of 171, followed by Sri Aman (163), Sarikei (158), Mukah (152), and Bintulu (147).

In Peninsular Malaysia, three urban locations posted unhealthy readings: Cheras in Kuala Lumpur at 153, Johan Setia in Selangor at 150, and Shah Alam at 103.

Across the national monitoring network, 56 locations reported moderate air quality with API readings ranging between 51 and 100, while only two locations nationwide recorded good air quality levels below 50.

Under the national environmental index, API readings are categorized as Good (0–50), Moderate (51–100), Unhealthy (101–200), Very Unhealthy (201–300), and Hazardous (above 300). Hourly updates are collated and published by APIMS using data collected from 68 continuous monitoring stations nationwide.
