KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — A tragic early-morning collision at the Maju Junction traffic light intersection on Jalan Sultan Ismail claimed the lives of three family members and left another severely injured today after an Immigration Department (JIM) truck lost control after entering the junction against a red light.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa stated that the accident took place at approximately 1:00 am. The unladen Isuzu “Black Maria” truck, driven by a 43-year-old local man, was travelling from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Office toward Chow Kit to conduct an enforcement operation targeting illegal immigrants.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck had entered the intersection against the red light with its emergency beacon lights and sirens activated. At the same instant, a Proton Saga driven by a 50-year-old local man was travelling straight through the junction on a green light. The driver of the Proton Saga was unable to avoid the oncoming vehicle, resulting in a direct collision with the truck.
The impact caused the JIM truck to lose control and skid, striking four pedestrians on the roadside—all belonging to the same family—as well as an Inokom Matrix driven by a 38-year-old local man.
Mohd Zamzuri confirmed that three of the pedestrians died at the scene from their injuries. The deceased were identified as a 53-year-old father and his two daughters, aged 25 and 12. The father’s 55-year-old wife suffered severe injuries to her head, arm, and both legs, and was immediately rushed to Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL), where she is receiving emergency treatment in the Red Zone. None of the drivers involved in the incident sustained injuries.
Police have detained both the 43-year-old truck driver and the 50-year-old driver of the Proton Saga to assist in the probe. Preliminary urine screenings and breathalyser tests conducted on both men returned negative results for drugs and alcohol.
Investigators are currently securing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from surrounding premises and attempting to trace independent witnesses. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Members of the public who witnessed the collision or possess relevant information are encouraged to contact the Jalan Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or report to any nearby police station.
