NUTP Allocates RM1.5 Million Annually for Teachers’ Legal Aid Amid Rising Civil Suits

KOTA BHARU, Sept 4 — The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has allocated RM1.5 million annually to aid teachers facing legal action arising from the execution of their official duties.

NUTP president Aminuddin Awang disclosed that the legal fund covers both civil lawsuits and criminal prosecutions, with legal expenses reaching up to RM80,000 in certain complex cases.

Speaking to reporters after attending the 24th NUTP Triennial Delegates’ Conference last night, Aminuddin highlighted a growing trend of parents and community members filing civil suits directly against individual teachers rather than targeting the government or the Education Department.

“Sometimes, parents or members of the community file civil suits against teachers over matters that could actually be resolved without having to go to court,” Aminuddin said.

In addition to civil defense, NUTP provides legal representation to members facing criminal prosecution, provided the case involves an element of mistreatment or victimization against the educator. As of August, the union has extended legal assistance in 16 cases, including three currently undergoing trial in Kelantan.

Aminuddin noted that teachers frequently face allegations under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt. Despite the criminal nature of such allegations, NUTP ensures affected members receive legal defense through its established panel of law firms.

“Among the cases teachers often face are those under Section 323 of the Penal Code for intentionally causing injury to another person. Although it is a criminal case, we will still provide legal assistance to our members,” he added, encouraging non-member educators to join the union to secure legal protection.
