Election Commission Reaffirms Commitment to Integrity and Transparency on 69th Anniversary

Election Commission 69th anniversary Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 — The Election Commission (EC) has reaffirmed its commitment to managing Malaysia’s electoral process with fairness, transparency, efficiency, and integrity as the democratic institution marks its 69th anniversary today.

In an official statement published on its Facebook page, the commission highlighted its continuous evolution since its inception, noting ongoing institutional improvements aimed at fortifying the nation’s democratic framework and enhancing public service delivery.

“May the EC continue to move forward with integrity and remain a trusted democratic institution in safeguarding and strengthening the country’s democratic process,” the commission posted, reiterating its core operational motto of efficiency and transparency.

Established on Sept 4, 1957, under Article 114 of the Federal Constitution, the EC originally comprised a three-member panel led by its inaugural chairman, Datuk Dr Mustafa Albakri Hassan, alongside members Lee Ewe Boon and Ditt Singh.

Following the formation of Malaysia in 1963, the commission expanded its membership to include an additional representative appointed on a rotating basis from Sabah or Sarawak. The administrative structure underwent further expansion in 2002 to its current format of seven members, consisting of a chairman, a deputy chairman, and five commissioners, which includes dedicated representation from both Sabah and Sarawak.
