Government Initiates Cloud Seeding in Haze-Hit Areas and Low-Level Dams, Says DPM Zahid

SERDANG, Aug 30 — Cloud seeding operations are currently underway in areas severely impacted by haze, specifically locations recording an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading above 150, as well as regions where dam water reserves are declining.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that the operations are being conducted in close collaboration with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF). He emphasized that the intervention is critical to mitigating potential water supply disruptions amid the ongoing hot and dry weather spell.

Speaking to reporters after launching the Laman Usahawan Desa KKDW at the 2026 Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Show (MAHA) today, Ahmad Zahid detailed the schedule and technical requirements for the operations. He noted that cloud seeding is taking place in Putrajaya today and is scheduled to be carried out in Sarawak, Kedah, and Perlis from Sept 3 to 5.

“This needs to be done because we know that water levels at many dams have been declining. Cloud seeding is carried out not only according to need but also depending on weather conditions. Even when clouds are present, we need to monitor their movement to determine whether they are moving towards the targeted areas,” Ahmad Zahid said.

The cloud seeding effort comes as air quality in Sarawak reached hazardous levels today. According to the Department of Environment’s Air Pollutant Index Management System portal, three areas in Sarawak registered hazardous API readings as of 12:30 pm. The monitoring station at the Serian Police headquarters recorded a peak API reading of 412, followed by Samarahan at 332 and Kuching at 304, while Sri Aman logged a very unhealthy reading of 228.
