JEMPOL, July 18 — The increasingly dynamic political landscape requires all parties to formulate new strategies and alignments to ensure political stability, said Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today.
Speaking to reporters, the deputy prime minister revealed that the fluid nature of domestic politics has forced major coalitions to rethink long-standing rivalries. He noted that the newly established electoral understanding between BN and Perikatan Nasional (PN) for the 16th Negeri Sembilan state election will serve as a vital test case. The operational outcome will determine whether this strategic approach should be extended to the upcoming Melaka state election and the next General Election (GE16).
“We will first assess its performance in Negeri Sembilan. As politics is highly dynamic, we will determine the necessary alignments for Melaka and other states in the future, especially in preparation for GE16,” Ahmad Zahid stated. He addressed the media after officiating the Gema@KKDW 2026 community outreach programme at Palong 8 near here today.
The unexpected tactical shift marks a major turning point ahead of the crucial regional polls. The BN chief clarified that the localized understanding does not mean BN and PN have formed a formal political cooperation, but is strictly aimed at avoiding overlapping contests that could split alternative votes on the ground.
“There is no binding agreement between the two coalitions, but there is an understanding to prevent overlapping contests for seats contested by BN or PN,” Ahmad Zahid added. The pragmatic non-aggression pact is expected to permanently alter how local campaigns are managed.
The ongoing seat distribution strategy comes at a time when the timelines for the Negeri Sembilan state election have already entered their final stages. The Election Commission previously announced that early voting for the regional assembly is officially scheduled for July 28, while the definitive polling day will take place on August 1.
