SHAH ALAM, March 19 – The Ruler of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has suspended Friday prayers and all activities at mosques, suraus and musolla in the state until 17 April 2020 due to the COVID19 pandemic.
In a statement by the Selangor Palace, the Ruler also decreed for Friday prayers to be replaced with Zohor prayers to be done at home instead.
“Should the pandemic be controlled earlier, a new decree will be announced,” the statement said.
The decree was made following the Movement Control Order (MCO) announced by the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on 16 March 2020.
Sultan Sharafuddin also advised the people of Selangor to avoid being in public places and to abide the MCO enforced to break the spread of COVID19.
Recently, the Minister of Islamic Affairs Datuk Dr Dzulkifli Al Bakri has instructed all mosque and surau activities including Friday prayers to be suspended for 10 days from 17 March 2020 for the same reason.
Prior to this, Perlis, Negeri Sembilan and Johor had announced the suspension of all mosque activities including Friday prayers due to the pandemic.
A tabligh event attended by 16,000 Muslims at Sri Petaling mosque had caused massive outbreak of the COVID19, with hundreds already tested positive. Nearly 2/3 of the 790 cases are related to the tabligh event.
