ISTANBUL, Nov 3 – US President Donald Trump downplayed the likelihood of immediate renewed military strikes against Iran following Tuesday’s midterm elections, emphasizing that diplomatic negotiations are making progress.
Responding directly to reporters after a campaign event in Washington on Monday, November 2, 2026, Trump delivered a concise “No” when asked whether he was preparing to initiate fresh strikes post-election.
Addressing supporters during the event, Trump reiterated his administration’s stance that Tehran must never acquire nuclear capabilities, claiming that Iranian leadership already understands this boundary. He called on American voters to factor in his administration’s non-proliferation efforts when casting their ballots.
Trump warned that allowing Iran to achieve nuclear capabilities would permanently destabilize the region, recalling previous military operations against Iranian nuclear infrastructure.
“We stopped that a year ago with those beautiful B-2 bombers, which hit every single mark and just put hundreds of tons of rock on top of everything,” Trump remarked.
The US President attributed falling global energy prices to positive expectations surrounding active diplomatic talks. “That’s why I guess the oil prices drop so precipitously,” he observed, noting that diplomatic frameworks were “coming together very nicely.”
In a separate interview with Axios, Trump stated he was under no immediate pressure to make a final determination on resuming direct military action against Tehran.
“One way or the other, we will do something, but there is no rush,” Trump explained, pointing out that severe US economic sanctions had significantly constrained Iran’s fiscal and logistical capacities. “We crippled them financially. They have no money, no gasoline and their people are getting very tired of it.”
While characterizing direct channels with Iranian negotiators as functional, Trump noted that Tehran appeared to be intentionally extending the negotiation timeline. “There’s less urgency (on the Iranian side) than you think there would be, but they want to make a deal more than they ever wanted,” he added.
Trump’s statements follow reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the White House during a Saturday phone call to execute immediate military strikes following the US midterms. However, Trump opted to give diplomatic negotiations further room to proceed despite concerns expressed by Israeli officials.
