KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 – Malaysia has formally decided not to extradite controversial independent preacher Dr Zakir Naik to India and has made no commitment to do so, the Dewan Rakyat was informed on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
In a written response to a query from Datuk Dr Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN-Pengkalan Chepa), the Home Ministry explained that the decision is rooted in Malaysia’s legal rights under Article 6 of the bilateral Extradition Treaty signed with India in 2010, alongside provisions under the Extradition Act 1992.
The ministry clarified that the Malaysian government has not received any fresh extradition requests from Indian authorities to date.
“An official request for Dr Zakir Naik’s extradition was previously received from the Indian government on Jan 19, 2018,” the Home Ministry stated. “The government also received a diplomatic note seeking reconsideration on May 29, 2020.”
Ahmad Marzuk had submitted a parliamentary question seeking an update on India’s extradition request for Zakir, inquiring about the timeline of the latest official request and whether the submitted documentation fulfilled the statutory thresholds set by the Extradition Act 1992 and the 2010 Extradition Treaty.
Dr Zakir Naik remains wanted by Indian law enforcement agencies over several criminal charges filed against him in his home country.
