UN Warns Of Deepening Displacement Nightmare In Gaza Amid ‘Ethnic Cleansing’ Concerns

UN Gaza displacement OHCHR ethnic cleansing yellow line

LONDON, Oct 31 – The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) issued a stern warning on Friday, October 30, 2026, stating that the continuous contraction of living space for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip has triggered a severe displacement “nightmare” that is both acute and chronic.

In an official statement released in London, the UN rights office noted that Israeli military operations continue to push civilian populations into ever-smaller zones while destroying critical infrastructure and targeting displacement camps “amid concerns of ethnic cleansing”.

The OHCHR documented a westward expansion of Israeli military deployments over the past fortnight across key areas adjacent to the “yellow line” demarcation boundary, including Al Shujaiyeh in Gaza City as well as eastern Al Bureij, eastern Deir Al-Balah, and eastern Al Maghazi in Middle Gaza.

Reports cited by the OHCHR highlighted an incident on October 25, 2026, where an Israeli drone dropped munitions on makeshift tents sheltering displaced families at the Al Shujaiyeh junction near the yellow line, causing a fire that burned for five hours.

According to the Palestinian Public Works and Housing Ministry, the strike forced 200 families—comprising roughly 800 individuals, predominantly women, children, and elderly persons—to flee once again.

Ajith Sunghay, head of UN Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, stressed that displaced Palestinians have virtually no prospect of returning to their original homes because most areas remain inaccessible beyond the yellow line.

The OHCHR warned that Israeli forces appear to enforce the yellow line as a “kill zone,” systematically preventing civilians from returning to remaining structures on the opposite side.

Reiterating international law obligations, the UN rights body emphasized that as an occupying power, Israel must immediately cease the forcible transfer of Palestinians within Gaza—a violation that constitutes a war crime and may amount to a crime against humanity—and facilitate their safe, dignified return.

Human Rights Findings, Military Exclusions, and Displacement Data

Key UN documentation, displacement figures, and legal warnings include:

  • Four Years of Displacement: Most displaced Palestinians in Gaza are entering their fourth winter living in temporary, flimsy tents under ongoing military fire.
  • Al Shujaiyeh Drone Strike: October 25 drone attack on tents displaced 200 families (800 people) and ignited a five-hour fire near the yellow line.
  • Enforced “Kill Zone”: Israeli military enforcement along the “yellow line” prevents civilians from returning to destroyed homes in eastern Gaza City and Middle Gaza.
  • International Law Violations: OHCHR warns that forcible population transfers constitute war crimes and potential crimes against humanity under international humanitarian law.
