KUCHING, Oct 13 – The Sarawak state government plans to consolidate the regulatory oversight of all state ports under the Sarawak Ports Authority to streamline coordination, optimize logistics efficiency, and strengthen overall trade competitiveness.

Sarawak Deputy Infrastructure and Port Development Minister Datuk Majang Renggi announced the initiative during the State Legislative Assembly sitting in Kuching on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

The strategic centralisation follows the state’s full takeover of Bintulu Port’s management and operations from the Federal Government, aligning regional port development with Sarawak’s broader economic agenda.

Port Clustering, Tariff Restructuring, and MA63 Alignment

The state government outlined comprehensive strategies to modernize maritime assets and avoid functional redundancies:

  • Strategic Port Clustering: Port operations across the state will be clustered based on geographic advantages and specific industrial strengths to eliminate overlapping services and maximize operational specializations.
  • Institutional Modernization: Identified enhancement measures include restructuring tariff frameworks, upgrading port infrastructure, digitalizing operational systems, and corporatising port management.
  • Bintulu Port Strategic Role: As a premier regional trade gateway and liquefied natural gas (LNG) export hub, Bintulu Port’s development will be integrated with other state ports to elevate overall cargo handling capacity.
  • MA63 Rights Realization: Majang emphasized that assuming full operational control over strategic maritime assets reflects the state’s commitment to safeguarding its rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

The port integration framework is expected to accelerate state economic growth while reinforcing Sarawak’s position as a major regional trade hub in Southeast Asia.
