Michelle Yeoh Named ‘Asian Filmmaker of the Year’ at 31st Busan International Film Festival

SEOUL, Aug 6 — Oscar-winning Malaysian actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh has been selected as “The Asian Filmmaker of the Year” at the upcoming Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), organisers announced Thursday.

In an official statement praising Yeoh’s ground-breaking career and defining contributions to global cinema, BIFF organisers highlighted her versatility, technical mastery, and pioneering legacy in film.

“Versatile, commanding, and fiercely resolute — Michelle Yeoh’s performances are transcendent in every aspect: technique, style, and presence,” BIFF organisers stated. “Yeoh revolutionised the representation of women in action cinema, establishing herself as one of Hong Kong cinema’s defining stars.”

Yeoh made her feature film debut in Yes, Madam! (1985) before establishing a prominent global profile with roles in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). She went on to star in box-office hits including Crazy Rich Asians (2018) and Wicked (2024), making history as the first Asian to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her lead role in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).

Her attendance at this year’s festival marks Yeoh’s return to the BIFF red carpet for the first time in 15 years, having last attended the annual film showcase in 2011 to promote The Lady.

To honor her achievements, this year’s BIFF will feature a special showcase highlighting three films selected by Yeoh—Reign of Assassins (2010), Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Sandiwara (2026)—in addition to screening her latest feature, It’s My Time (2026).

The prestigious award will be presented during the opening ceremony of the 31st edition of BIFF, which runs from October 6 to 15 in the southeastern port city of Busan.
