PUTRAJAYA, Oct 12 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has initiated an investigation into individuals responsible for creating and circulating social media content allegedly insulting His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on the Threads platform.
In an official statement released on Monday, October 12, 2026, the regulatory body confirmed that it made direct contact with Meta, the operator of Threads, following the viral spread of an edited image featuring the Yang di-Pertuan Agong accompanied by offensive elements.
Following MCMC’s intervention, Meta removed the offending content and blocked user access to the involved account on the platform.
Regulatory Enforcement, Legal Framework, and Reporting Channels
The commission outlined its legal position and urged public cooperation in halting the spread of harmful digital content:
- Legal Enforcement Action: MCMC emphasized that formal legal action will be taken if investigations confirm violations of national laws, including provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).
- Platform Collaboration: The regulatory body affirmed its ongoing coordination with major social media providers to ensure prompt action against violations, adhering strictly to platform community guidelines and national legal frameworks.
- Public Sharing Advisory: MCMC explicitly warned members of the public against uploading, downloading, or re-sharing the offensive image to prevent further dissemination across digital networks.
- Official Complaint Channels: Citizens encountering offensive or illegal content are encouraged to lodge reports through the Threads in-app reporting system, the official MCMC Complaints Portal (https://aduan.mcmc.gov.my), or direct channels managed by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
MCMC reiterated its commitment to maintaining digital public order and protecting national institutions from online abuse.
