Anwar Slams Luxury BMW Lies: Vehicle is Existing Government Asset

BATU PAHAT, July 9 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has flatly rejected viral social media allegations claiming he purchased a luxury BMW car for personal use, branding the rumors as outright fabrications designed to distort his anti-graft narrative.

Speaking at the ‘Yok! Meriahkan Johor! Undi Harapan’ campaign rally in Senggarang today, Anwar clarified that the vehicle in question is not a new acquisition but an older asset. He expressed frustration over the persistent smear campaigns targeting his administration ahead of the high-stakes 16th Johor state election.

“People are claiming that Anwar talks about helping the poor but has bought a new BMW. I did not buy it. It is an old vehicle. Why spread lies?” Anwar told the crowd.

The Prime Minister also shed light on his current official transport, a Mercedes-Benz, explaining that it was a royal gift from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia. Instead of keeping the vehicle under his private name, Anwar declared that he surrendered its registration directly to the state to maintain absolute public accountability.

“The vehicle I am using now was bestowed by the King. I did not take ownership of it personally. I registered it under the Prime Minister’s Department. I am not like others who siphon off and steal the people’s money,” he said.

To quell the expanding online disinformation, the Prime Minister’s Department (JPM) along with the Ceremonial and International Conference Secretariat Division (BIUPA) had released a joint clarifying statement on Monday. Both agencies confirmed that the BMW vehicle used by the premier during recent official circuits is a pre-existing federal logistic asset under BIUPA management, utilized exclusively for official government transport rather than private ownership.

The political rally was heavily attended by Pakatan Harapan (PH) stalwarts, including Communications Minister and PH Communications Director Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The coalition’s candidates vying for the crucial Senggarang, Semerah, and Penggaram state seats—Onn Abu Bakar, Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar, and Felicia Poh Rui Ling—were also on the ground to rally voters.

The campaign push comes at a critical juncture as political machinery gears up for the main ballot boxes this Saturday, with PH fielding candidates across all 56 state seats to secure a comprehensive legislative mandate in Johor.
