BUTTERWORTH, Aug 28 — Malaysia is coordinating the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Nepal following devastating flash floods in the country, including the potential deployment of the Malaysian Special Search and Rescue Team (SMART), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today.
Speaking to reporters after performing Friday prayers at Masjid Sembilang here, Anwar stated that the National Security Council (MKN) is maintaining close contact with the Nepalese government to determine the most effective form of support, whether through financial aid or rescue personnel.
“At the moment, MKN is coordinating whether we should send the SMART team or aid, which we will decide,” Anwar said.
Describing the catastrophe as occurring on an unprecedented scale, the Prime Minister noted that several nations, including India, China, and Bangladesh, have already provided assistance to aid the ongoing emergency response in Nepal.
Anwar affirmed that the Foreign Ministry is actively compiling and updating information on Malaysians in the impacted areas while search and status verification efforts remain underway. He urged the families of Malaysians currently in the affected regions to reach out to the Foreign Ministry through established official channels to assist in gathering verified information.
The Prime Minister had previously instructed all relevant authorities, including MKN and the Foreign Ministry, to immediately trace and establish contact with affected Malaysians. According to the Foreign Ministry, 57 Malaysians remained uncontactable as of 11:00 pm on Aug 27, based on reports received from family members, friends, and employers.
