Man Killed in Tragic Cheras-Kajang Highway Hit-and-Run After Changing Tyre

Cheras-Kajang Highway hit and run

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — A routine roadside tyre change turned fatal last night when a 46-year-old driver was killed in a hit-and-run incident while retrieving a warning marker placed behind his vehicle at KM13 of the Cheras-Kajang Highway.

Kajang District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof, stated that the incident occurred at approximately 10 pm. The victim, who was operating a silver Toyota Innova carrying five passengers, had safely pulled over onto the road shoulder after experiencing a flat tyre.

“After changing the tyre, the victim walked to the rear of his vehicle to remove a bucket that had been placed as a warning marker for other road users when a red Toyota Innova struck him. The driver of the red Toyota Innova then fled the scene without stopping,” Naazron said in an official statement released today.

Emergency responders confirmed that the driver of the silver Toyota Innova suffered catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The five passengers who were inside the stationary vehicle at the time of the impact did not sustain injuries.

Traffic investigators have formally classified the hit-and-run under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Law enforcement has launched a manhunt to locate the fleeing vehicle and identify the perpetrator behind the wheel of the red Toyota Innova.

To expedite the ongoing investigation, the police are appealing to the public for eyewitness accounts, dashcam footage, or any relevant information regarding the tragedy. Naazron urged anyone with details regarding the incident to contact Investigating Officer Inspector Nur Faezah Mohd Zakria directly at 012-3268496 to assist in the investigation.

In light of the incident, the district police chief reminded motorists of their shared responsibility regarding highway safety and situational awareness during night drives.

“Police advise all road users to drive prudently, always obey traffic regulations and exercise caution while driving,” Naazron said, emphasizing that adherence to safety standards is vital to preventing preventable roadside fatalities.
