KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 — A total of 55 Malaysians remain uncontactable following devastating floods and landslides in Rasuwa District, Nepal, while consular assistance has been expanded to stranded citizens in China, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) announced today.
Two Malaysians previously reported as uncontactable have been successfully reached, with verification of the remaining cases ongoing. The Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu continues to liaise with Nepal’s Emergency Response Team, the Nepal Tourism Board, travel agencies, and local emergency services to track affected citizens.
As of 5:00 pm Nepal time on Aug 28, Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported that 771 people have been rescued, including 116 foreign nationals. However, Wisma Putra confirmed that no Malaysian has been identified among the rescued foreign nationals to date. Authorities also remain on alert for potential secondary water surges originating from the Tibet Autonomous Region in China.
In response to widespread travel disruptions, Wisma Putra expanded its consular operations to assist Malaysians stranded across the border in China.
“A group of 72 Malaysians in Darchen, China, has been confirmed safe and in good health. The Embassy of Malaysia in Beijing is in contact with the group, and their families are aware of their status. The Embassy is providing consular assistance, including support for their travel arrangements to leave the Tibet Autonomous Region,” the ministry said in a statement.
Separately, Wisma Putra is coordinating with Chinese authorities and family members regarding 36 Malaysians reported uncontactable in areas affected by telecommunications outages. Officials are cross-checking these records against reports in Nepal to prevent duplication during the verification process.
