LHASA, Aug 29 — Seven people have been killed and 554 others remain missing after a massive mudslide struck Gyirong Port along the China-Nepal border in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region.
The mudslide, which originated on the Nepalese side on Wednesday morning, hit Gyirong Port in Gyirong County, causing extensive damage. According to the region’s emergency management department, two local villagers had been successfully rescued as of 1:00 am on Saturday as search operations continue.
A total of 2,141 rescue personnel and 86 specialists in natural resources and related fields have been deployed to the disaster area. Equipped with specialized technical gear, emergency teams have intensified inspections for potential geological hazards across surrounding slopes, roadways, and other critical zones.
To guard against secondary disasters, authorities have established a five-person monitoring post to keep a barrier lake under constant observation. Additionally, response crews have cleared and reopened 1.02 kilometers of road to restore essential transportation and emergency access to the site.
