KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on the United States and Iran to immediately halt further military escalation and return to diplomacy amid intensifying hostilities in West Asia.
Anwar warned that the latest exchange of strikes, which has extended beyond the immediate belligerents and into neighboring states across the region, threatens to draw the broader Middle East into an even more destructive conflict.
In a statement posted on Facebook today, Anwar emphasized that the party with the greatest capacity to shape regional events bears a primary responsibility to show restraint and prevent further conflict.
“The sovereignty of other states cannot be cast aside. No military objective justifies exposing civilians to an expanding conflict,” Anwar said.
The Prime Minister also cautioned against punitive economic measures that inflict hardship on civilians and hinder diplomatic engagement, stating such actions exacerbate rather than resolve the crisis.
Anwar urged both Washington and Tehran to immediately return to diplomacy and honor the understandings reached in June, stressing that the dispute can only be resolved through political and diplomatic means. He added that the international community must not be made to pay the price for a wider regional war.
