KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — Police have confirmed that a pipe bomb threat targeting Centrepoint South Tower in Mid Valley City last night was a hoax, with specialized police sweeps finding no explosive devices or suspicious objects on the premises.
Brickfields police chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook stated that the district police headquarters (IPD) Control Centre received a report regarding the threat from the commercial building’s security manager at 8.17 pm.
According to police, the complainant reported that building management had received an email claiming a pipe bomb had been planted inside the tower, prompting an immediate evacuation of the building as a precautionary measure.
Following the alert, police dispatched specialized units to conduct a security sweep of the commercial property.
“Acting on the information, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Bomb Disposal Unit and K9 Unit were deployed to conduct a thorough inspection of the premises at 10.30 pm,” Hoo said in a statement today.
“A comprehensive search of the premises found no explosives, suspicious objects or bomb-related devices at the scene,” he added.
Elaborating on the incident, Hoo noted that preliminary investigations indicate the hoax email was sent by an irresponsible party intending to create panic and disrupt public safety.
Police are investigating the case under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation by anonymous communication, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities or network services.
