KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 – Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade recorded sales value of RM173 billion in August 2026, marking a 10.5 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) expansion, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
In a statement released on Friday, October 9, 2026, DOSM highlighted that the sector’s volume index grew by 3.6 per cent y-o-y, reflecting positive growth across all three primary sub-sectors.
The wholesale, retail, and motor vehicle segments collectively added RM16.4 billion to overall trade sales during the month, driven primarily by strong momentum in wholesale operations.
Sub-Sector Breakdown and Performance
All three sub-sectors contributed to the positive trade trajectory in August 2026:
- Wholesale Trade: Led total growth with sales reaching RM81.2 billion, representing a significant increase of RM11.5 billion or 16.5 per cent y-o-y.
- Retail Trade: Expanded by RM4.4 billion or 6.5 per cent y-o-y to achieve RM71.7 billion in total sales.
