Cabinet Suspends New Defence Purchases From Norway

Malaysia suspends Norway defence procurement

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — The federal government has officially instructed the Defence Ministry to implement an immediate, indefinite suspension on all new procurements of defence equipment and supplies originating from Norway.

The decisive administrative boycott was confirmed today by MADANI Government spokesperson and Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He revealed that the drastic policy directive was finalized during today’s Cabinet meeting following an extensive review of recent geopolitical events surrounding Norway’s sudden cancellation of an export licence for critical maritime missile systems. The blocked weapons were originally slated to arm the Royal Malaysian Navy’s (RMN) flagship Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) vessels.

“The Cabinet has decided that the Defence Ministry suspend with immediate effect any procurement of new defence equipment or assets from Norway,” Fahmi announced in an official press statement.

The diplomatic friction tracing back to the European nation escalated after the Norwegian government unilaterally revoked the essential export certification for its proprietary Naval Strike Missiles (NSM). Oslo cited its need to safeguard its own national security interests as the underlying justification for breaking the supply agreement.

In swift retaliation to the contract collapse, the Defence Ministry issued a formal RM1.06 billion compensation claim against the primary manufacturer, Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace (KDA), to recover substantial direct outlays and offset wider strategic costs.

In tandem with the procurement ban, federal authorities have proactively moved to bridge the naval vulnerability. The Defence Ministry has already convened a dedicated military panel to vet substitute weaponry, shortlisting four potential alternative supplier countries to furnish the LCS fleet with modern anti-ship missile hardware.
