Malaysia Records 17.5m Tourists in Five Months

Malaysia international visitor arrivals

PUTRAJAYA, July 8 — Malaysia welcomed a robust 17.5 million international visitors between January and May this year, marking a 3.4 percent growth compared to the same period last year. Sektor pelancongan has displayed steady resilience, driven heavily by solid holiday demands across core regional and global markets despite ongoing global geopolitical friction.

Tourism Malaysia Director-General Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim disclosed that the positive shift was anchored primarily by arrivals from neighboring ASEAN nations, alongside China, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Additionally, Central Asian markets—particularly Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan—registered a notable surge in traveler traffic.

“If not for the conflict in the Middle East, we could have targeted even stronger growth. Nevertheless, the 3.4 per cent increase shows that Malaysia’s tourism industry remains resilient,” Mohd Amirul Rizal told reporters today.

The Director-General shared the statistics following the official signing of a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) between Tourism Malaysia and global travel guidance platform Tripadvisor. The strategic two-year accord, which runs through the end of 2027, was finalized alongside Tripadvisor’s Asia Pacific (APAC) Enterprise Sales Director Scott Wegener to bolster digital promotion tracks ahead of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.

Under this joint venture, Tourism Malaysia will secure direct access to Tripadvisor’s consumer performance statistics and behavioral travel insights. The agency plans to leverage this data to fine-tune its digital tourism packaging and targeted marketing algorithms. The partnership will simultaneously focus on onboarding domestic tourism products to expand their online visibility to global audiences, while exploring co-branded digital innovations and industry excellence awards.

Mohd Amirul Rizal noted that Tourism Malaysia has proactively realigned its baseline promotional strategies to aggressively capture high-potential regional zones like South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China, while actively negotiating with global commercial airlines to establish fresh direct routes into the country.

“At the domestic level, we are also intensifying efforts to enhance tourism products by refreshing our travel package offerings to ensure they remain attractive and encourage more people to travel within the country,” he added.

Compounding the positive marketing push, Malaysia secured three distinct accolades at the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards 2026. Kuala Lumpur was crowned among the top food destinations in Asia, the Petronas Twin Towers secured status as one of the region’s premier attractions, and Langkawi Island’s Pantai Cenang was named among Asia’s finest beaches.

Mohd Amirul Rizal concluded that these prestigious traveler-voted titles underscore the global competitiveness of Malaysia’s modern travel ecosystem and will serve as a strong baseline to anchor international arrivals throughout VM2026.
