KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained the chairman of a housing committee under a Johor statutory body for allegedly soliciting RM1.6 million in bribes and abusing his position regarding housing lot applications.
The suspect, a man in his 40s, was taken into custody after arriving at the Johor MACC headquarters to record his statement at approximately 7:30 pm yesterday.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the alleged offences took place over a nine-year period between 2016 and 2025.
According to sources, the suspect is believed to have demanded roughly RM4,000 from each of 400 applicants seeking housing lots. The collected funds were subsequently siphoned for personal use through bank account withdrawals supported by forged invoices.
“Preliminary investigations found that the suspect allegedly committed the offences between 2016 and 2025,” a source revealed, adding that the suspect solicited about RM4,000 from each of 400 applicants, involving a total of about RM1.6 million.
Johor MACC Director Datuk Hairuzam Mohmad Amin@Hamim confirmed the arrest, stating that the case is being investigated under Sections 16(a)(A), 18, and 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
Hairuzam added that the suspect will be released on MACC bail once investigators complete recording his statement.
