IPOH, Aug 14 — An enforcement officer in his 40s has been remanded for three days starting today to assist in investigations over allegations of accepting roughly RM190,000 in bribes from a local cooking oil packaging company.
The suspect was produced at the Ipoh Magistrate’s Court this morning, where Ipoh Assistant Registrar Mohd Shazmeer Zamhari granted a three-day remand order extending until Aug 16 following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The man was taken into custody at approximately 5.00 pm yesterday after reporting to the MACC Taiping branch office to give his statement.
According to sources, the illicit payments were allegedly solicited to facilitate the company’s application for a subsidised cooking oil quota, as well as to protect the firm from regulatory enforcement actions.
“Initial investigations found that the suspect allegedly committed the offence between 2022 and 2026. He is believed to have received the bribes through 19 cheques deposited into his personal bank account,” a source disclosed.
Perak MACC Director Azizul Ahmad Sarkawi confirmed the arrest when contacted, stating that the investigation is being conducted under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, which addresses offences relating to soliciting or receiving gratification.
