KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof is making a smooth recovery after successfully undergoing double coronary artery bypass surgery at the National Heart Institute (IJN) on Wednesday.
Fadillah, who also serves as the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), was admitted to IJN on July 28 and underwent a coronary angiogram the following day.
In a statement issued today, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister expressed deep gratitude to the IJN medical team for their professional expertise and dedicated care throughout his treatment.
“Thank you to the ministries, mosques and surau, houses of worship, government and private agencies, non-governmental organisations, family, friends and all Malaysians who have continuously prayed for his recovery and given him their support,” the statement read.
In a separate update, IJN confirmed that the 64-year-old Deputy Prime Minister is demonstrating positive recovery milestones following the double coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedure performed on August 12.
According to IJN, a multidisciplinary medical evaluation following his angiogram concluded that bypass surgery was the most appropriate course of treatment.
The procedure was performed by IJN Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeons Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Ezani Md Taib and Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mond Azhan Yakub, alongside Clinical Fellow Dr Ahmad Mahir Shamsuddin.
The operation was conducted under IJN’s Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol—a specialized multidisciplinary framework aimed at encouraging early physical activity, mitigating surgical risks, and facilitating a safer recovery timeline.
IJN Group Chief Executive Officer Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Ezani Md Taib noted that the clinical team is highly satisfied with Fadillah’s progress as his rehabilitation continues according to schedule.
“As part of his early mobilisation programme on Aug 13, the Deputy Prime Minister successfully completed 2.8 kilometres of cycling exercise under the supervision of IJN’s clinical team,” Dr Mohamed Ezani stated.
“He was subsequently transferred from the Intensive Care Unit to the general ward that afternoon, where he continues his post-CABG cardiac rehabilitation,” he added.
