KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — Disruptions to nationwide internet connectivity and the direct fiscal impact of the ongoing conflict in West Asia on Malaysia’s fuel subsidy expenditure are among the core economic and social issues scheduled to dominate the Dewan Rakyat parliament session today.
According to the official Order Paper published on the Parliament website, Baram Member of Parliament Datuk Anyi Ngau will initiate the session by pressing the Communications Minister for answers regarding digital infrastructure failures. Specifically, Anyi will ask the Communications Minister to state the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) comprehensive plan to address the issue of internet services being unavailable despite mobile devices showing full signal strength.
Shifting the focus toward macro-economic vulnerabilities, Bachok Member of Parliament Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman is scheduled to ask the Finance Minister about the government’s latest assessment of the impact of the conflict in West Asia on the country’s fuel subsidy expenditure and how the overall rise in subsidy costs may affect this year’s fiscal deficit target. The inquiry comes amid tightening budgetary scrutiny as global energy markets react to geopolitical tensions.
Addressing domestic housing equity, Pasir Salak Member of Parliament Jamaludin Yahya will ask the Finance Minister about measures to facilitate self-employed individuals, small traders, hawkers and gig workers in obtaining financing for their first home despite not having fixed salary slips.
Concurrently, social welfare policy will take center stage as Puchong Member of Parliament Yeo Bee Yin will seek clarification from the Women, Family and Community Development Minister on the government’s readiness to establish a national regulatory framework and enact new laws to regulate confinement centres. The request highlights growing public calls for standardized healthcare and safety monitoring within the maternal care industry.
Following the high-level question and answer session, the Dewan Rakyat will immediately pivot to legislative reforms. Lawmakers are set to proceed with the tabling of the Communications and Multimedia (Amendment) Bill 2026 and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (Amendment) Bill 2026 for their respective second readings.
The two heavily anticipated statutory Bills were initially introduced and tabled for their first reading in the Dewan Rakyat last Monday (July 13). Today’s extensive legislative push marks a crucial phase for the current Dewan Rakyat parliament session, which is scheduled to run for a total duration of 16 days before formally concluding tomorrow, July 16.
