ISTANBUL, Aug 29 — The death toll from catastrophic floods and landslides in Nepal has risen to 623 as search and recovery teams continue to retrieve bodies carried downstream by overflowing rivers, according to local authorities.

Nepal police confirmed that 616 bodies have been recovered so far, with Chitwan and Nawalparasi East emerging as the hardest-hit districts, recording 233 and 158 fatalities, respectively. Additional bodies were retrieved across Gorkha, Dhading, and Nuwakot following severe overflow from the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, with several victims carried as far as the border with India.

At least 638 people remain unaccounted for in Nepal, including 511 foreign nationals. Meanwhile, in neighbouring China, state media reported that seven people have died and 554 remain missing following related mudslides along the border.

Nepalese emergency services reported that 2,301 people have been rescued or treated for injuries, with the majority of survivors located in the Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts. To manage recovery and search operations, 4,811 emergency personnel have been deployed across the affected regions, while 27 police officers remain out of contact.
