Dataran Merdeka to Host Massive World Cup Final Live Screening

World Cup Final

KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 — Football fans will have the unique opportunity to catch the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 final live on a giant screen at Dataran Merdeka in the early hours of Monday morning (July 20).

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus announced that the live screening stands as one of the major highlights of the “Unity Merdeka” programme, a multi-agency initiative that kicked off yesterday and runs through Sunday. The massive public event is organized by the Kuala Lumpur police force in strategic collaboration with 16 ministries.

He explained that the core objective of the programme is to foster a much stronger sense of national unity across Malaysia’s multi-ethnic communities. A diverse host of preliminary public activities will officially begin at 8 pm tomorrow, building structural excitement up to the midnight final match screening.

“We’ll be setting up a massive screen at Dataran Merdeka, and we’re hoping to draw a crowd of up to 300,000 people to come and watch the game together. We’re encouraging the public to fill up Dataran Merdeka, which we hope will also earn the programme a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records,” Fadil told reporters today following the conclusion of the Fun Run Unity Merdeka event at Dataran Merdeka.

Earlier in the day, roughly 2,000 participants successfully took part in the five-kilometre run, an activity specifically designed to strengthen community policing ties and build closer relationships between the capital’s police force and local residents.

The public run featured high-profile participants including Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief DCP Datuk Mohd Azani Omar, alongside 16 active members representing the Crime Journalists Association.

Held under the official theme Diversity United, Wellbeing Preserved, the overarching Unity Merdeka carnival brings together a rich mix of community elements, ranging from welfare and local arts to education, religion, family-oriented activities, and live entertainment open to visitors of all ages.

Other prominent crowd-pullers at the venue include comprehensive educational exhibitions and interactive booths set up by various national security and government agencies, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), and the Ministry of Health (MOH).
