Abang Johari: Sarawakians Reject Racial Politics in Pursuit of Progress

SIBU, July 26 — Premier of Sarawak and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg declared today that the people of Sarawak are increasingly rejecting race-based politics, demanding instead governance that delivers tangible economic development, technological advancement, and social justice.

Speaking at the PBB Central Zone Special Convention here today, Abang Johari emphasized that political narratives centered on race and religion have become obsolete in the modern digital era, making way for leadership built on wisdom, merit, and administrative competence.

“The majority of the people want development and a better life, not racial politics. In today’s digital era, what is important is wisdom, knowledge and ability, not race or religion,” Abang Johari stated.

The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman highlighted that the coalition’s inclusive approach to governance has delivered widespread benefits across all ethnic communities. He cited the appointment of Sarawakians from diverse racial backgrounds to lead major state agencies and corporate entities, including Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), as clear evidence of merit-based appointment practices.

“If a Malay becomes a leader, he must be fair to all. If an Iban becomes a leader, he must also be fair to all. That is our principle,” he added.

Reflecting on the coalition’s six-year record, Abang Johari noted that extensive infrastructure programs—encompassing roads, bridges, electricity grids, and clean water supply—have been systematically rolled out to uplift rural communities across the state, demonstrating PBB’s commitment to delivering concrete results over political rhetoric.

Addressing party members, Abang Johari urged the rank and file to remain steadfast against slander and divisive rhetoric aimed at fracturing PBB’s internal unity, warning that political stability remains the vital foundation for Sarawak’s long-term prosperity.

He stressed the importance of cultivating a new generation of capable young leaders to safeguard Sarawak’s constitutional rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and ensure the state meets its comprehensive post-pandemic development targets by 2030.
