KOTA BHARU, Sept 17 — Two women were injured after an ambulance with suspected brake failure lost control and crashed with two cars at Simpang Tiga Kampung Neting along Jalan Kota Bharu-Pengkalan Kubor in Tumpat yesterday.
Tumpat district police chief ACP Mohd Khairi Shafie said the incident occurred at 1:15 pm when the Toyota Hiace ambulance, driven by a 43-year-old local man heading towards Pengkalan Kubor, experienced suspected brake failure upon reaching the location.
The vehicle went out of control and collided with a Proton Waja driven by a 33-year-old woman and a Perodua Viva driven by a 29-year-old woman, both travelling from the direction of Kota Bharu.
“As a result of the collision, the driver of the Proton Waja suffered an injury to her head, while the Perodua Viva driver sustained injuries to her left knee,” Mohd Khairi said in a statement today.
Both victims were conveyed to Tumpat Hospital for medical treatment, while the ambulance driver escaped unhurt. A urine test conducted on the ambulance driver subsequently returned negative for drugs.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, with further investigations underway to ascertain the exact cause of the crash. Following the incident, police advised all road users to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained to prevent technical failures.
