TAPAH, Aug 16 — The Malayan Indian Congress (MIC) will defend its solitary Gadek seat in the upcoming Melaka state election for now, while the party leadership evaluates whether to request an increase in the number of constituencies it will contest.
Speaking to reporters after attending the 2026 Tapah Parliamentary Students Laptop Handover Programme at Dewan Mahatma Gandhi today, MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri M. Saravanan stated that the leadership is assessing key electoral factors before making any formal decision regarding additional seat allocations. These considerations include constituency suitability, candidate strength, and overall winning viability.
“Any decision on additional seats to be contested by MIC in the Melaka state election has yet to be finalised as the matter is still under consideration by the party leadership,” Saravanan said.
The Tapah Member of Parliament noted that MIC President Tan Sri S. A. Vigneswaran is currently evaluating potential candidate line-ups, with a final decision expected in the near future.
Saravanan added that MIC has already initiated groundwork across key areas, focusing on identifying voters, consolidating core party supporters, and analyzing local issues that could shape the upcoming state election campaign.
“For now, we have started groundwork to identify voters, particularly our core supporters, as well as issues that are currently being addressed or need to be addressed in the near future,” he explained.
In the 2021 Melaka state election, MIC contested under the Barisan Nasional (BN) banner and secured victory in the Gadek state constituency through its candidate, VP Shanmugam, who won a six-cornered contest with a 559-vote majority.
