Dewan Rakyat session adjourns

KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 — The Second Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 15th Parliament officially adjourned today after completing a productive 16-day legislative cycle that began on June 22.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul delivered the definitive adjournment speech, highlighting the extensive legislative achievements of the current session. Lawmakers successfully debated and passed 13 comprehensive Bills alongside several key motions, which notably included a thorough evaluation of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) 2024 Annual Report.

The primary legislative output focused heavily on public safety, digital security, and regulatory reforms. Among the definitive statutory frameworks passed by the House were the Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Sexual Offences Against Children (Amendment) Bill 2026, and the highly anticipated Cybercrimes Bill 2026.

The extensive legislative push continued with the successful passage of several economic and social protection updates. Parliament officially approved the Competition (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Competition Commission (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Control of Padi and Rice (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Witness Protection (Amendment) Bill 2026, and the Social Work Profession Bill 2026.

Furthermore, the government secured final approval for the Communications and Multimedia (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (Amendment) Bill 2026, the National Trust Fund Bill 2026, and the updated Statistics Bill 2026. Beyond legislative voting, the session included three detailed ministerial briefings, an additional executive briefing in the Special Chamber, and six comprehensive reports presented by various Select Committee chairmen.

Before wrapping up the parliamentary session, Johari issued an important administrative directive regarding the well-being of the lawmakers. He explicitly reminded all Members of Parliament to undergo mandatory health screenings before October 30 and to submit their medical records to Parliament for safekeeping.

“I hope Honourable Members will take care of your health during the upcoming election campaign period,” Johari noted, acknowledging the demanding political timelines ahead.

To promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen ties with the public, Johari announced that the institution will host the ‘Larian Cergas Parlimen 2026’ on July 25. The inaugural 5-kilometre fun run will be open to all Members of Parliament, parliamentary staff, Malaysian Youth Parliament participants, and members of the public.

Concluding his address, the Speaker expressed his highest appreciation to the lawmakers for their professional cooperation, as well as the civil servants, media practitioners, and support staff who managed the daily operations of the House. The Dewan Rakyat sitting has been adjourned to a date to be determined later.
