Melaka Pakatan Harapan Withdraws From State Government Administration

Melaka Pakatan Harapan Withdraws

MELAKA, July 16 — The political landscape in Melaka has undergone a definitive shift. Today, Melaka Pakatan Harapan withdraws from state government administration. The move follows their intense ideological opposition to recently passed structural adjustments regarding non-elected lawmakers in the legislative house.

A comprehensive joint statement was signed by the top leadership tier, including Melaka PH Chairman Adly Zahari, acting Melaka PKR Chairman Adam Adli Abdul Halim, Melaka DAP Chairman Khoo Poay Tiong, and Melaka Amanah Chairman Datuk Ashraf Mukhlis Minghat. They confirmed that the choice to split from the Barisan Nasional-led leadership was fully consolidated during an emergency summit today. The high-level meeting involved the complete state leadership council alongside all elected alliance representatives.

The primary objective of the summit was to establish a unified front against recent legislative policies. The emergency session verified the immediate withdrawal of PH’s five state assemblymen from the active state government. The strategic pullout took place after the coalition reaffirmed its strict institutional stand against the constitutional amendment.

“The decision to withdraw from the state government is in line with democratic principles and practice, whereby an executive councillor or state assemblyman who no longer supports a state government motion in the State Legislative Assembly is no longer entitled to continue enjoying the privileges and facilities accorded by the state government,” the joint leadership council stated in the public release.

The internal realignment will trigger a massive structural vacancy at the grassroots governance levels. Beyond the core lawmakers leaving the executive cabinet, the council decided that all its local councillors and Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) members would step down from their respective positions effective July 31. The staggered timeline was implemented explicitly to ensure a smooth transition of local council authority.

Despite the abrupt administrative divorce, the leadership expressed high professional courtesy toward the remaining state actors. Melaka PH explicitly expressed its sincere appreciation to the chief minister, the state government, and the civil service for their trust and cooperation throughout its tenure in the state administration.

The leadership team clarified that their shift into a standard check-and-balance role would not diminish their constituency duties. The coalition emphasized that its state assemblymen would continue serving the people of Melaka, regardless of political affiliation, until the end of their current mandate.

The political alliance collapsed following a controversial vote in the state legislature on Tuesday. The assembly successfully passed sweeping amendments to the Melaka State Constitution to allow for the direct appointment of nominated state assemblymen. The newly enacted governance mechanism faced unified resistance from the coalition’s five state assemblymen, who viewed the expansion of non-elected legislative seats as a compromise of baseline democratic values.
