Kuala Lumpur — Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has been appointed as the official monitoring officer for the Pandan parliamentary constituency, marking a major strategic deployment for the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) chairman into Selangor politics.

The announcement was made by PKR Vice-President and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari during the Himpunan Setia Keadilan Pandan gathering today. Tengku Zafrul, who also serves as the Senior Political Adviser to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, will effectively act as the government’s direct representative in the area.

Amirudin revealed that Tengku Zafrul’s new assignment came at the personal request of the Prime Minister, aligning with Tengku Zafrul’s active interest in participating more closely in the Selangor political landscape.

The structural move follows a broader administrative reorganization within the party after the recent departure of Pandan’s former Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. To fill the vacancy and maintain a seamless transition for constituents, Anwar Ibrahim has personally taken over Pandan as his adopted parliamentary seat, placing Tengku Zafrul on the ground to manage and streamline the parliamentary service centre.

In addition to his primary responsibilities in Pandan, Tengku Zafrul has also been tasked with monitoring the neighboring Ampang parliamentary constituency. However, Amirudin noted that because Ampang’s leadership consists entirely of established party members, internal grassroots operations there will remain independent unless critical issues arise requiring direct intervention.

Amirudin reassured party supporters that managing key constituencies vacated by prominent former leaders is not an unmanageable challenge for the machinery.

“This is not uncharted territory for us,” Amirudin stated, drawing parallels to past structural transitions. He noted that the party successfully navigated similar transitions following the high-profile exits of former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali in Gombak and former vice-president Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin in Ampang, pointing out that electoral victory margins in Ampang actually increased in the subsequent election.
