GEORGE TOWN, July 29 (Bernama) — Two Immigration officers were detained by the Penang Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on suspicion of ‘counter-setting’ misconduct during a special operation held at the Penang International Airport (LTAPP) yesterday.

The MACC stated that the two officers involved were detained following intelligence that detected abuse of power and corruption (accepting bribes) at the LTAPP involving unprocessed entry of foreigners.

“‘Counter setting’ involves the entry of foreigners into Malaysia whereby immigration officers abuse their power by deliberately allowing their entry at predetermined lanes without going through the prescribed immigration screening for proper documents,” the MACC statement said today.

MACC said the two officers were detained to assist in investigations under the MACC Act 2009.

It said further investigations were also underway to fully identify the network and modus operandi.

MACC stressed that strict action will be taken against any party involved in corruption or abuse of power, especially in the enforcement sector involving national security and sovereignty.
