
Kuala Lumpur, Sept 4 – Malaysia has accepted Russia’s invitation to participate in the upcoming BRICS summit to be held in Kazan, Russia from October 22 to 24, 2024, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said the invitation, which was extended by President Vladimir Putin himself during their working dinner, clearly showed Malaysia’s importance to Russia. “This represents an important step towards our ultimate goal of joining the bloc,” he said in a press release today during a two-day visit to Russia to attend the 9th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

BRICS is a group of governments made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. The Prime Minister is expected to address the EEF meeting on Thursday.
Anwar said that during the meeting, he and Putin expressed their commitment to strengthen relations between Malaysia and Russia. “As Malaysia continues to expand its geo-economic opportunities and diversify its relations, Russia will be a key partner that shares our vision of growth, prosperity and development. ,” he said.
From Islamic finance to agriculture to education, the Prime Minister said Malaysia and Russia’s ability to leverage their expertise for the benefit of their countrymen is tremendous. He added, “As we work on the commitments and visions that were discussed during this visit, I hope that the foundations laid today will lead to better cooperation between Russia and Malaysia in years to come.”
