Johor, March 13 — Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said today that he was ready to relinquish his leadership of the coalition if asked to by members or leaders of its component parties following its defeat at the Johor state election.

Muhyiddin said his post as chairman was determined by the components according to the principles of democracy.

“I am ready to step down at any time as my position is only with the agreement of the component parties.”

“In victory, I am responsible, and in defeat, I am also responsible,” he said at a press conference at PN’s operations room in Senai post the announcement of the election results.

Despite fielding candidates for all 56 state seats in Johor, PN won only three, namely in Maharani, Endau, and Bukit Kepong.

This is the coalition’s second defeat following the Melaka election last November.

Nevertheless, the Pagoh MP said PN had succeeded in making inroads and had gained traction in a number of areas despite being a new coalition.

When asked about the prospect of Parliament being dissolved, Muhyiddin said he hoped that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob would discuss the matter with PN before any decision is made.

Of the 56 seats up for grabs in the Johor state election, Barisan Nasional secured a two-thirds majority with 40 seats, Pakatan Harapan won 11 seats, Perikatan Nasional with 3 and MUDA, and PKR took one seat each.
