KERTIH, Sept 14 — A total of 500 one-day-old green sea turtle hatchlings were released into the sea at the Ma’ Daerah Turtle Sanctuary Centre today as part of conservation efforts under the 2026 Sustainable Environment Programme.
Organised by the Terengganu Girl Guides Association of Malaysia, the initiative aimed to support the survival of the species and enhance public awareness surrounding marine turtle conservation across the state.
Regent of Terengganu Tengku Muhammad Ismail Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin personally released several hatchlings, measuring 2.5 centimetres each, at approximately 6:30 pm. Also present were his sister Tengku Puteri Daulath Raja Tengku Fatimatuz Zahra’, Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, and Terengganu Fisheries Department Director Pang Nyukang.
The hatchlings were incubated at the sanctuary prior to their release. Earlier in the event, Tengku Muhammad Ismail urged the public to actively safeguard the environment and marine ecosystems to ensure natural resources remain sustainable for future generations.
“Protecting the environment is not solely the responsibility of the government or certain organisations. It is a shared responsibility. Although our individual actions may seem small, when taken by millions of people, their impact can be significant,” Tengku Muhammad Ismail said.
He warned that growing threats such as pollution, littering, and uncontrolled human activities continue to disrupt the natural balance, endangering fish, coral reefs, and turtles alike.
