MADRID/KYIV, Nov 5 – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that he held a 90-minute detailed telephone discussion with US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner during a visit to Madrid, focusing on preparations for upcoming US-mediated trilateral peace talks with Russia.
The trilateral negotiations, scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on November 10–11, 2026, represent the first direct trilateral diplomatic engagement involving Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington since February.
Speaking from Spain on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine has already submitted its formal framework proposals to the American side.
“The negotiations must move forward at full throttle to bring this war to an end as quickly as possible,” Zelensky stated. “Ukraine is ready to take the necessary steps. Peace has no alternative, and postwar security guarantees must be truly cast-iron.”
Beyond diplomatic framework planning, Zelensky pressed US envoys for critical air defense support—specifically Patriot interceptor missiles—to protect Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian populations from ongoing Russian ballistic attacks. Defense cooperation, bilateral drone agreements, and civilian protection dominated his bilateral meetings with Spanish leadership in Madrid.
Zelensky also welcomed international Reconstruction Talks held in Brussels on Wednesday, which brought together representatives from the US, Germany, France, Britain, the European Union, NATO, the World Bank, and Ukraine to outline long-term post-war recovery funding. Follow-up security guarantee sessions were scheduled to continue in Brussels on Thursday, November 5.
Despite renewed diplomatic momentum, international expectations regarding immediate breakthroughs remain tempered, as Russian forces continue aggressive military engagements and Moscow maintains maximalist political objectives.
