Weak Earthquake Hits Kinabatangan, No Damage Reported

KINABATANGAN, Sept 26 – A weak earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale struck Kuamut, Kinabatangan, early Saturday morning, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 5:32 AM, was located at 5.1 degrees north latitude and 116.8 degrees east longitude at a depth of 118 kilometers. The location was approximately 32 kilometers southwest of Tongod, Sabah, and 223 kilometers northwest of Tarakan, Indonesia.

MetMalaysia confirmed that the tremor posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia.

Following the report, a six-man team from the Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station initiated safety patrols and monitoring across key locations at 6:26 AM.

Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station chief Suriyadi Drawis stated that officers inspected several public sites and high-risk areas, including the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) premises, the Bukit Garam Library, and Bukit Garam Point.

“The inspection found no collapses or structural damage to any of the buildings checked,” Suriyadi said in an official statement.

Fire and rescue personnel advised local residents to stay alert and maintain vigilance regarding potential aftershocks.
