KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — The Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) signifies the definitive conclusion of the pilgrimage fund’s past management missteps and paves the way for a transparent, integrity-driven institution, said Finance Minister’s political secretary Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim.
In a statement published on his Facebook page today, Muhammad Kamil described the RCI report as a pivotal national milestone that unmasked systemic misappropriation within an institution entrusted with safeguarding Muslim savings.
He emphasized that the public has a fundamental right to complete transparency, noting that funds deposited into TH represent the hard-earned savings of everyday Malaysians striving to fulfill their religious obligations.
“It must be stressed that every ringgit deposited with the institution is not surplus money. Rather, it comes from tapping rubber, working in padi fields and orchards, driving taxis, running small businesses and countless other forms of hard labour by ordinary people, all with one great aspiration — to become guests of Allah,” Muhammad Kamil stated.
“Therefore, when such a great trust is handled negligently, what is betrayed is not merely the reputation of an institution, but the hopes and prayers of millions of Muslims who have patiently saved for years,” he added.
Muhammad Kamil stressed that current leaders will not cover up institutional failures, defend the reputation of previous administrations, or shield any individuals or groups involved in past wrongdoings.
He affirmed that the MADANI Government elected to bring the truth to light despite knowing that certain quarters preferred for the fund’s past controversies to remain hidden and forgotten.
“But we must have the courage to admit that mistakes and lapses have occurred. Therefore, our task now is to ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” he asserted.
“May this RCI report mark the end of that dark chapter and the beginning of a Tabung Haji institution that is more transparent, upholds integrity, and is truly centred on the interests of the Muslim community,” Muhammad Kamil concluded.
