KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 — Air quality across Sarawak deteriorated further today, with six areas recording Air Pollutant Index (API) readings at the hazardous level as of 8:00 am, led by the Serian District Police Headquarters monitoring station at 408.
According to data from the Department of Environment’s Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) portal, the five other locations in Sarawak logging hazardous API levels were Kuching (407), Samarahan (372), Sri Aman (361), Sarikei (333), and Sibu (309).
Three additional districts in Sarawak recorded very unhealthy API readings: Mukah at 234, Bintulu at 232, and Samalaju at 225.
Meanwhile, nine locations across the country registered unhealthy air quality. The Miri Industrial Training Institute (ILP) recorded the highest in this category at 187, followed by Miri (180), Kapit (178), Labuan (167), and Limbang (166). In Sabah, Kimanis and Keningau both logged readings of 156, alongside Tawau at 132, while Johan Setia in Selangor recorded an API reading of 123.
A total of 48 monitoring stations nationwide reported moderate API levels. Under the national air quality rating system, API readings between 0 and 50 indicate good air quality, 51 to 100 moderate, 101 to 200 unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy, and readings exceeding 300 are classified as hazardous.
