Sir Patrick Stewart

ISTANBUL, Oct 30 – Sir Patrick Stewart, the acclaimed British stage and screen actor celebrated globally for his iconic roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, died on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 86.

His death was officially announced on Thursday by his longtime spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak.

“We announce with great sorrow the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia,” Novak stated.

Born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, England, Stewart was the youngest of three sons born to Alfred Stewart, a British Army regimental sergeant major, and Gladys Stewart, a textile factory worker. He rose above a challenging childhood to establish himself as a distinguished Shakespearean stage performer, joining the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966.

Throughout his esteemed theatrical career, Stewart earned prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards for his roles in Antony and Cleopatra (1979) and Hamlet (2009), as well as a London Fringe Theatre Best Actor Award in 1986 for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.

Stewart achieved international superstardom in middle age when he debuted as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 1987’s Star Trek: The Next Generation. The series ran for seven seasons, winning 18 Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award, and spawned catchphrases such as “Engage!” and “Make it so”. He reprised the role across four feature films and returned for three seasons of Star Trek: Picard beginning in 2020.

Beyond his Star Trek legacy, Stewart portrayed Gurney Halleck in David Lynch’s 1984 film Dune and brought Professor Charles Xavier to life across five X-Men feature films, culminating in 2017’s Logan, frequently starring alongside close friend Sir Ian McKellen.

Addressing theater critics who questioned his transition from classical stage to mainstream Hollywood blockbusters, Stewart maintained immense pride in his popular roles.

“For huge numbers of people, I will always be Jean-Luc Picard, and that’s fine. I really believe we created an admirable individual,” Stewart reflected in a 2003 interview.
