SHAH ALAM, Oct 3 – Members of the public who have complaints or concerns regarding local media reporting ethics are advised to submit them through the official channels of the Malaysian Media Council (MMM).
Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil stated on Saturday, October 3, 2026, that grievances regarding news headlines or media reporting should be channeled properly to prevent misunderstandings that could undermine the integrity and credibility of the press industry.
“If it concerns reporting by the media itself, I would suggest that members of the public, who have concerns about a news headline or anything they wish to raise with the media, use the official complaints channel through the MMM. There is a link that can be accessed,” Fahmi said following the officiating of the MADANI Kita Programme in Shah Alam.
Police and MCMC Investigation Into Offensive Content
Fahmi’s comments follow police and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) reports lodged by the Putrajaya Media Club (KMP) on Friday regarding a social media post that used artificial intelligence (AI) to edit photographs of media personnel into offensive animal images.
The targeted press photos were taken while journalists and photographers covered former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s visit to the grave of his late wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, at Pusara Negara in Putrajaya on Thursday, October 1.
Key updates from the Ministry of Communications regarding the investigation include:
- Identification of Accounts: MCMC has identified several social media accounts responsible for creating and distributing offensive AI-edited content during the mourning period for Tun Dr Siti Hasmah.
- Active Tracking: Authorities, alongside the police, are actively tracking down the individuals responsible for creating and uploading the abusive material.
- Removal of Accounts: Fahmi noted that key accounts involved in disseminating the images appear to have been deleted or taken offline.
Fahmi also reminded members of the media to maintain respect and grant space to Tun Dr Mahathir and his family during their period of grief.
